Bus Tours

A classic example of a bus tour of Vienna could consist of the Ringstreet with its stately architecture, then past the Hundertwasser House to the Prater and the UN headquarters. Further highlights that could be included are the Belvedere castle or Schönbrunn Palace or the Kahlenberg – a hill from which one has an amazing view of Vienna and surroundings. There is also the option to combine a bus trip with a walk. If you are encountering difficulties hiring a bus or a minibus please get in touch and of course I would be happy to help. The public transport system is both affordable and reliable, meaning that many interesting and enjoyable tours can be undertaken by public transport if you prefer. There are so many possible routes and options and I would be delighted to create a perfect experience for you, tailored to your personal interests and requirements!

Tour 1: Classic tour of Vienna with two stops

Belvdere optimalThis tour offers a very good historic and geographic overview of the city. You get to see the imposing architecture along the Ringstreet: State Opera, Hofburg palace, the twin museums (dedicated to the history of art and nature respectively), the parliament, the town hall, the university and the Votiv church. After this we stop at the Belvedere castle, the garden palace of Prince Eugene and now home to the Austrian Gallery, where you will enjoy the baroque gardens and the marvelous view over Vienna. Then the route goes past the Karlskirche (St. Charles’ Church) and the Musikverein (from where the Vienna Philharmonic’s annual New Years’ concert is broadcasted), past the Vienna Secession as well as the Naschmarkt (Vienna’s colourful and largest outdoor market) and the museum quarter. Then we come to our second stop, an unusual and colourful house designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. From there on we head for the Prater with the Ferris wheel and on to Vienna’s highest building, the Donauturm. On the way back along the Danube and the Donauinsel there are beautiful views of the hills (Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg) and the Vienna Woods to be enjoyed.

Tour 2: Historic Vienna, Schönbrunn castle and the Hofburg Palace

Schönbrunn Ehrenhof IThis tour focuses on the most important historic sights of Vienna such as the imposing architecture of the Ringstraße (a circular road around the centre of Vienna) with its many impressive buildings such as the State Opera, the Hofburg palace, former winter residence of the Habsburg family, the twin museums of art history and natural history, the parliament and the town hall, the university and the Votiv church. Then the path takes us past the Karlskirche (St. Charles’ Church) and the Musikverein to the Belvedere castle – which together with the Hofburg palace and the Schönbrunn castle is one of the largest and most important Baroque castles in Vienna – and which also houses the most comprehensive and valuable collection of Gustav Klimt pictures in the world. I personally would recommend to finish with a guided tour through the sumptuously fitted representation rooms of Schönbrunn Castle, the summer residence of the Habsburgs. Another option would be a tour of the imperial apartments in the Hofburg palace instead.

Tour 3: Historic Vienna on wheels and on foot (3 h)

StephansdomThis tour combines both the highlights that are easiest reached by bus and those that are best explored on foot. We are going past the imposing buildings that the Ringstraße (a circular road around the centre of Vienna) is famous for: The State Opera, the museums of art history and natural history as well as the parliament, then on to the former summer residence of Prince Eugene, Belvedere castle. All this is followed by a walk through the historic centre of Vienna leading to the Hofburg palace. We go past the Treasury and the former court church of the Habsburgs, St Augustine’s church. Next we pass the Stallburg (the imperial stables), where the famous white Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School are housed. After this we will stroll along Vienna’s two most elegant shopping streets – Kohlmarkt and Graben. All this will be accompanied by fascinating facts and amusing stories – from the funeral ceremony of the Habsburgs and the imperial family in general to the famous Viennese coffee culture. This tour ends right in the heart of Vienna in front of one her most famous sights, the gothic St Stevens cathedral.

Tour 4: Panorama Tour + Ferris wheel / Donauturm / Boating

HundertwasserhausThis tour takes us past the Hundertwasserhaus towards the Prater where there is the option to take a ride on the Giant Ferris wheel, Vienna’s second most famous landmark. From there I will take you across the Danube to the Donauinsel (an artificially created landscape), past the UN headquarters and the Donauturm, through the pretty and picturesque village of Grinzing with its many Heurigen (a typical Viennese wine tavern). Another high point of this tour is the breathtaking view from one of the various viewpoints of the hills that make up the Vienna Woods: Cobenzl, Kahlenberg or Leopoldsberg. If you wish and there is enough time, we could conclude the tour with a drive along the Ringstreet. If you prefer there is the option of going up to the viewing platform of the Donauturm instead of going on the Ferris wheel. Another possibility during the summer months would be to take a boat tour on the Danube (approx. 1 ½ h).

Tour 5: A Viennese evening (with or without Ferris wheel /Donauturm) + a visit to the Heurigen (traditional Wine taverns)

Riesenrad und crazy mousOur evening will start with a drive along the illuminated Ringstreet and from there on to the popular amusement park Prater, where you will take a ride with the Ferris wheel. From there we cross the Danube to the UN Headquarters and the Donauturm on to Grinzing, the probably most famous of the little Heurigen villages in Vienna. On the way you will hear more about the wine growing areas of Vienna, the history of the Heurigen (which is regarded almost as an institution rather than just a place that serves refreshments) and the local „Schrammel“ music and many amusing stories and anecdotes about artists and composers who lived in the area and went to the Heurigen for inspiration. Next we would visit one of the traditional Heurigen where you have the opportunity to sample the young Viennese wine and enjoy some delicious traditional Viennese food. There is also the option to visit the first Viennese Heurigen Show where you will be entertained with traditional Viennese drinking songs, Operetta arias and traditional dancing.
